From "The Journal": CHRIS Hughton has mounted a staunch defence of his Newcastle United promotion heroes, insisting they are a better team than the side which took the Magpies down 12 months ago. Since promotion was clinched last week pundits have been lining up to warn the United boss his squad will need serious strengthening over the summer to stave off a relegation fight. Newcastle managed to hold on to a core of the players which featured in that nightmare campaign, but lost so-called big hitters like Obafemi Martins, Michael Owen, Mark Viduka and Damien Duff in their summer clear-out. Hughton argues United’s players have developed since that demotion and, with the unity and confidence generated over the season, they represent a much tougher nut to crack – even without substantial reinforcements.
